Ever since the 70’s and 80’s the term virtual reality gained and lost popularity on a regular base. Back in those days a virtual reality machine consisted of a full body suit and helmet that players had to wear. Every bodily motion was transferred to a 3D computer simulation. There are various reasons why this technology never made it into our living rooms.
After a relatively long period of absence, virtual reality has become popular again. By far the biggest contributor to this is the Oculus Rift and her competitors. At this point in time the Oculus Rift is only available for software developers, although the consumer version is expected soon. We are one of the lucky few who have one! Developing for the Oculus Rift, or any other virtual reality machine, follows the same action plan that we follow for any other game project. But because this technology is still very new, there are hardly any examples from the field. That’s why, we will spent extra time and energy during the concept phase for all the technical aspects and challenges. There is still a lot of pioneering that needs to be done.
A game for the Oculus Rift is best suited for bold companies, who like to stand out of the crowd and don’t shy away from a little risk.
